As we travel through life, we will all have to make adjustments and choices. There are times when change is initiated by forces outside ourselves, and there is change that we actively seek when we make decisions that can alter the course of our life.
Change is a normal part of life, yet it can be extremely stressful, especially when it is thrust upon us or unexpected. Even positive changes and transitions can bring a great deal of stress to our lives. There will always be a need to adjust, and a need for the people in our lives to adjust as well.
Some examples of life transitions include:
- Getting married
- Getting divorced
- Having children
- Children leaving home
- Starting a new job
- Being fired
- Moving
- Accidents
- Retirement
- Loss of loved one
- Acute and chronic illness
It is necessary that anyone going through a life transition get the support and validation that they need. It can be helpful to discuss any fears, frustrations, sadness, etc. that may accompany a life transition with family, friends or perhaps, a therapist. While family and friends can be helpful, sometimes it helps to express your emotions in a supportive, stable, empathic, nonjudgmental environment where you can discuss the impact a life transition has on your life and relationships.
