Marriage and couples counseling

Relationships can ignite our deepest joys and deepest fears. Relationships undergo also many stressors these days. It is often easy for couples to loose that sense of connectedness and tender intimacy that brought them together in the first place. However, it is possible to help heal relationships that have been scarred and broken. Clients can decide in therapy to address improving their communication and increase their emotional intimacy. Each will learn what part they play in the dysfunctional habits that perpetuate their pain. Couples who are considering marriage participate in processing their thoughts and feelings prior to the ceremony to identify any rough spots. I have witnessed many couples refresh their commitment to each other after therapy. It is possible to improve most parts of a committed relationship when partners are open to new ideas and ways of doing things.

Grief, bereavement and Pet Loss

There is no doubt that our pets are family. The connection we form with them often transcends other relationships. Our pets show us love and devotion that lifts our spirits, inspires and makes life worth living. Sometimes we can feel closer to them than to the people in our lives. When it is time to say goodbye, it can be devastating and heartbreaking. Life can seem shallow and bleak and we lack the energy even for simple things. Every experience of grief is unique. Therapy allows you to express your grief in a safe, supportive setting and discover ways to honor your beloved friend. You will learn that grief is normal and that you are not going crazy. We learn ways to remember with love and move beyond the pain.

Life Transitions

We all have different experiences as we go through the stages of our lives. Some may be easy as they are expected or welcomed. Others may be unexpected and require that we make adjustments in our lives that we would rather not make. Coping with the illness of a loved one or having to accept the responsibilities of being their caretaker are two examples that most people struggle with. Other examples may include divorce, children leaving home, making a career change or accepting our limitations as we grow older. Sometimes it helps to process our thoughts and feelings about the changes in our lives within a safe and supportive environment. We can explore how you can develop healthy coping strategies to keep your life feeling worthwhile and rewarding.
